  8. Pregnancy testing

Although everything up to this stage may have gone smoothly and embryos were put back without difficulty, (there is a reasonable chance) that you will not get pregnant. Many embryos are lost or shed before the menstrual period is due. This is very disappointing and the reasons for these failures are not always clear. If you are pregnant, then we shall offer you ultrasound scans to confirm that the pregnancy is in the right place and developing normally.

Scans are usually done at least 7-14 days after a positive pregnancy test and again roughly two weeks later. There is no point in offering a scan before this time, because the developing embryo will be too small to be seen with the naked eye, let alone with the relatively crude picture we get with ultrasound.
